M-division BMWs have always been a rarefied choice. Of the 26,823 3-series saloon sales in the UK last year just 3.1 per cent were M3s. And from this year, when BMW splits sales of its M3 coupé model into an M4 delineation, it expects to sell 1,000 Coupés, 400 convertibles and just 180 saloons.

BMW’s first M car was the Giugiaro-designed 1978 mid-engined M1, and the first Motorsport modified road car, the 1980 M535i, but it was the M3, first introduced in December 1986 that most quickened pulses of motorsport fans.

With its Falkenhausen four-cylinder engine, the E30 M3 was a habitué of Europe’s race tracks and the most successful-ever touring car. Its E36 and E46 six-cylinder replacements were more powerful, but initially not as communicative or good to drive, though BMW worked hard to restore the car’s reputation on road and track. Then in 2007, the Mark IV E92 M3 adopted a brutish V8, which again wrote cheques the chassis and handling were not fully able to honour.
